NOT a Bad Habit 🚫 Rocking, feeding, and holdin NOT a Bad Habit 🚫 Rocking, feeding, and holding your baby to sleep? This is a perfectly normal and natural way to get your baby to sleep, and not a bad habit whatsoever. ❤️ BUT if it feels overwhelming, it’s also okay to want to make a change—and you can absolutely make one responsively. For years, parents have been told that comforting a baby to sleep will “spoil” them or create “bad habits.” Let’s just set the record straight: comforting your baby is normal and needed. Babies crave connection and closeness to feel safe enough to drift off. 🌟 Why?: 1️⃣ Sleep is rooted in the parasympathetic nervous system: To sleep well, we need to feel calm and regulated. Ever tried to fall asleep when you’re upset or wired? Much harder, right? It’s the same for your baby—they rely on you to help them settle into a state of rest. 2️⃣ Co-regulation builds self-regulation: Your calming presence—whether it’s rocking, patting, or shushing—helps your baby to calm though co-regulation - they essentially borrow your calm until they have developed the ability to regulate themselves! 3️⃣ And for my newborn mamas: The fourth trimester is all about your baby adjusting to the world. Rocking, shushing, and patting mimic the comforting sensations they felt in the womb, helping them feel safe in their big bright new world. ✨ BUT here’s the thing: if you’re feeling exhausted, stretched thin, or unsure how long you can keep it up—it’s also perfectly okay to want to make a change. The best part? You don’t have to sacrifice connection or attachment to do it. If you’ve ever caught yourself comparing your ba If you’ve ever caught yourself comparing your baby’s sleep to someone else’s, I want to gently stop you right there. I used to wonder the same thing—why didn’t my baby sleep like the ones I heard about? The ones who “slept through” at just a few weeks old? Here’s what I wish I had known back then: every baby is SO different. Their sleep needs, their temperament, and even their development—all unique. Even (and sometimes especially) between siblings sleep can look completely different! Comparing your baby to someone else’s can make you feel like you’re doing something wrong, but I promise, you’re not. Keep following your instincts. When you stop comparing and start focusing on what works for your baby, everything shifts. Responsive parenting doesn’t hold your baby back from better sleep, it simply tunes into their needs so they feel secure and supported. I’ve worked with parents who’ve stopped focusing on what their baby “should” be doing and started focusing on their baby was telling them they needed—and the transformation was absolutely incredible. Comparison can be an absolute joy thief - as well as robbing you of your confidence in your parenting. Trust yourself. Trust your baby. You’ve got this!! Tears and big feelings can be hard—on everyone 💕 Change is tough, not just for your little one but for you too. And those big, messy feelings you might see when working on sleep? They’re completely normal. It’s okay to want to make changes that help your family thrive, even if those changes feel challenging. The truth is, when it comes to making changes to sleep, it can feel tricky and overwhelming—for you and your baby. BUT here’s the good news. Tears and big feelings, when supported by a loving caregiver, are not the enemy. They’re a natural way for your baby to express, “This is hard for me and I need your support”. Part of making a parent-led change is being calm, steady and reassuring, even if emotions are heightened. It’s not our job to try to silence tears, rather, it’s our job to hold space for our child’s feelings and support them as we make a change. It is about showing your child, “I’m here, and we’ll get through this together.” While yes we are working on sleep - you’re also teaching your little one that their big feelings are safe with you.
